(Towson, MD) - October 1, 2022 - Since 2014, MileOne Autogroup, the mid-Atlantic region’s largest automotive retail group, has supported employees and their families on the road to success through its NextMile Scholarship program, which grants funding toward enrollment in a college, trade school or university. MileOne is pleased to announce that it has awarded 93 academic scholarships totaling $232,500 for the 2022-2023 academic year, bringing the total contributions to scholarships over the nine-year history of the program to $1.8 million.
The students who received the scholarships are either employed by MileOne or are family members of employees across its Heritage, Hall, Herb Gordon, Annapolis and MotorWorld divisions and its corporate team.
The students receiving scholarships attend more than 30 different academic institutions across the country, including Anne Arundel Community College, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Duke University School of Medicine, Elizabeth City State University, George Mason University, King’s College, Old Dominion University, Penn State University Park, Tidewater Community College, Towson University, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Delaware, University of Houston, University of Maryland College Park and University of Scranton.
Scholarships awarded through The NextMile Scholarship program allow students such as Robin Jackson of Dallas, Pennsylvania, who is an internet sales manager for MotorWorld Hyundai/Mitsubishi, and Leyla E. Navarro-Salazar of Norfolk, Virginia, who is an accounting clerk at Hall Corporate, to pursue their educational studies as they seek careers in nursing and speech pathology/audiology.
Jackson, a senior nursing major at Misericordia University, is seeking to obtain her RN, BSN degree before pursuing a master’s degree in midwifery. Her passion for wanting to help mothers in labor in their most vulnerable moments has inspired her career path. “I hope to one day open my own practice and give assistance to mothers in low-income regions where affordable health care availability is a struggle,” she said.
Navarro-Salazar, a senior speech pathology and audiology major at Old Dominion University, is a first-generation university student who has always had a goal of completing her degree and giving back to her family. Upon graduation, Navarro-Salazar said she intends to continue her studies in graduate school, believing that “regardless of the situation, anything can be achieved with hard work.”
In addition to supporting employees and their families with The NextMile Scholarship program, MileOne is an avid supporter of the communities it serves across the mid-Atlantic region. Since its founding in 1997, the company has donated funds, volunteer hours and vehicles to hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the communities it serves. Under the newly launched MileOneCares corporate giving program, the company will primarily focus its philanthropic outreach on transportation-related initiatives. MileOneCares also supports the company’s 3,900 employees through The NextMile Scholarship program; the MileOne Support Fund, which provides financial assistance in times of disaster or emergency hardship; and an employee-nominated grant program, in which employees can apply for funds to support causes to which they are personally connected.
