(Owings Mills, MD) - May 7, 2025 - Eight Maryland mothers are able to spend more time with their families this Mother's Day weekend thanks to Vehicles for Change.

11 News was there as the nonprofit organization and MileOne Autogroup surprised each mother with their own car on Wednesday.

Before the donations, the mothers didn't have access to reliable transportation to get to work or even the grocery store. One of the mothers, Mikia Gardener, told 11 News the donation gives her the chance to look for a second job and even go back to school.

"This is a process that opens up so many opportunities that were barriers at one time," Gardener told 11 News. "Just being steady and just trying to get where I need to go and not giving up, now I've been rewarded with transportation for me and my five boys to get where they need to go."

Gardener said that when she used to work in Glen Burnie, it took her three and a half hours each day to get to and from work via public transportation. With a car, it's just a 20-minute drive.

Since 2017, more than 220 vehicles have been donated at a value of more than $1.5 million.
